Book Review
"Start Here, Start Now: A Guide to Anti-Bias" by Liz Kleinrock is an exceptional resource that deserves a prominent place on every educator's bookshelf and is also available in audio format (a four-hour listen). This empowering book provides a comprehensive and practical guide to promoting anti-bias practices in the classroom community, equipping guides with the necessary tools to create inclusive and equitable learning environments. As a 0-3 AMI Trainer, it was helpful when planning my own courses at Montessori Northwest to ensure we are providing a foundation for our learners to understand anti-bias work in the classroom and beyond.
From the very first page, Liz Kleinrock's passion for anti-bias education shines through her words. Her writing style is engaging and relatable, effortlessly bringing complex concepts to life and making them accessible and actionable for teachers. The book is thoughtfully structured, taking educators on a transformative journey from self-reflection to the implementation of concrete strategies in their classrooms. Even for those working with our youngest learners, it’s a valuable resource.
One of the book's most relevant aspects is its emphasis on self-reflection and personal growth, which is also an important part of the preparation of the adult as Montessori educators. Kleinrock encourages guides to delve deep into their own biases, assumptions, and privileges, challenging them to confront discomfort and develop a profound understanding of their learners' experiences. Through compelling anecdotes, reflection prompts, and practical exercises, she skillfully leads us in continuously questioning and unpacking our biases, nurturing an inclusive and empathetic approach to education.
"Start Here, Start Now" is a treasure trove of resources and strategies for integrating anti-bias education into the community. Kleinrock offers valuable insights on creating diverse and representative classroom materials, facilitating meaningful discussions on identity and social justice, and providing concrete tools and lesson ideas that can be adapted to various age levels and subjects. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.
