How to Choose Great Books for the 3-6 Classroom

Several key factors should be considered when choosing books for the 3-6 classroom. Firstly, opt for stories that are relatable and realistic, enabling children to connect with the content while broadening their horizons. For younger or new children, you can select shorter books, while longer ones can be suitable for older children, to be read over multiple days. Prioritizing diversity is essential, encompassing a range of cultures, people, families, authors, and illustrators. Books serve as mirrors, reflecting the children's experiences and cultures, making them feel seen and valued. At the same time, books act as windows into the lives of others, fostering empathy and understanding.  Look for books that show cross-group relationships, resilience in the face of oppression, life/culture-affirming narratives, and books that feature BIPOC characters in a story that could be true for any child.

Additionally, reading stories from books models storytelling as a creative process derived from others' knowledge, experiences, and imagination. It emphasizes the significance of literacy in preserving and sharing stories even in the absence of the original storyteller. Picture book illustrations offer different perspectives on the story, demonstrating how words evoke visualization and can lead to varied internal imagery. Moreover, illustrations provide a visual representation of the story's logical sequence, supporting children's reading development and confidence.
