RECLAIMING EDUCATION: CENTERING INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE & HUMANITY IN LEARNING

August 19, 21, 26 & 28, 2025 | 4:00-7:00 pm PT / 7:00-10:00pm ET | Trisha Moquino & Margarita Acosta | Montessori Northwest, Portland, OR | $490

Montessori Northwest is proud to host the Indigenous Montessori Institute (IMI) as a way of amplifying their work. IMI receives 100% of the proceedes from this event.

Join us for a transformative weekend workshop designed for Montessori educators seeking to deepen their understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems and their relevance to holistic, humanizing education. Through four rich modules, this workshop invites participants to reflect, learn, and explore ways to integrate these insights into their classroom environments and practice.

  • Reclaiming the Education of Our Children: Explore how Tribal Nations—and all educators—can reclaim the education of children by grounding it in Indigenous language, science, beliefs, and values. This session offers a compelling call to create education that affirms identity and fosters wholeness.

  • Indigenous Early Childhood: Discover the enduring wisdom of Indigenous child-rearing practices, many of which are still present in Native communities today. This module uplifts and revalidates traditional knowledge about early childhood development and care.

  • The Tyranny of Outcomes: Critically examine the historical and ongoing impact of imposed educational outcomes on Native children. Participants will unpack how these frameworks strip all children of their humanity and consider liberatory alternatives rooted in cultural affirmation and authentic development.

  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems: Learn how every Native Nation holds unique systems of knowledge—from language to land stewardship. This module offers insights into how these systems can enrich Montessori practice and support the growth of all children in creating a more connected and sustainable world.

This weekend is an invitation to listen, reflect, and engage in meaningful dialogue about how Indigenous perspectives can expand and enrich Montessori education—for Native and non-Native children alike.

AWARENESS PRACTICE AS SPIRITUAL PREPARATION

Wednesday, October 22, 2025 | 4:00-5:30 pm PT / 7:00-8:30pm ET | Jess Fraley | $65

In Montessori education, the teacher’s role extends beyond instruction—they are a guide, observer, and model for the child. Dr. Maria Montessori emphasized that teachers must undergo their own inner preparation to cultivate a peaceful, respectful, and responsive learning environment. Awareness practices serve as a powerful form of spiritual preparation, fostering presence, patience, and deep awareness—essential qualities for supporting each child’s development.

This session takes a healing-centered approach to education, offering research-backed insights on the benefits of mindful awareness and practical techniques tailored for Montessori educators. Discover how awareness can enhance your practice, nurture your well-being, and create a more grounded and attuned classroom environment.
